In the coastal city of Durrës, Albania, a unique architectural marvel has emerged, challenging conventional design norms. Sky-K, a creation of Selgascano in collaboration with FRPO Rodríguez & Oriol, stands out as a vibrant addition to the Adriatic coastline. What makes this project particularly fascinating is its ability to blend bold aesthetics with a thoughtful approach to urban living.
A Colorful Intervention
Sky-K presents itself as a pair of slender residential towers, a stark contrast to the surrounding apartment blocks and port infrastructure. The towers, painted in vibrant red and yellow, seem to rise like chimneys, catching the sun's rays and creating a striking visual marker along the coast. From the water, this effect is even more pronounced, with the colorful volumes appearing to emerge suddenly from behind the city skyline.
Double Presence, Single Impact
The site's setback from the waterfront creates an intriguing duality. While the tower belongs to a small hidden lot at ground level, its height and color make it an integral part of the city's visual identity. Selgascano's design embraces this duality, with a thin footprint that allows light and views to flow around the structure, minimizing its impact on the surrounding environment.
A Garden Sanctuary
At the base of Sky-K, Selgascano has envisioned an open Mediterranean garden, a welcome addition to the dense residential block. The tower is supported by six concrete columns, lifting the main volume and creating a planted space for residents. This design choice not only reduces the building's footprint but also adds a layer of greenery, softening the tower's presence and offering a peaceful retreat within the urban fabric.
Chimney-Like Towers
Above the podium, Sky-K splits into two distinct towers, described by Selgascano as chimney-like. Each tower has a small plan footprint and a unique color, with undulating concrete facades that draw the eye upward. The corrugated texture creates a strong vertical rhythm, while the rounded openings, varying in size and proportion, add an element of surprise and depth. These terraces not only offer breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and the city's hills but also support natural ventilation, enhancing the living experience within each apartment.
Colorful Silhouettes
The red and yellow towers of Sky-K stand out against the pale concrete and beige apartment slabs, adding a pop of color to the urban landscape. From the beach, the towers appear as vertical markers, partially hidden by the surrounding palm trees and apartment buildings, creating an intriguing interplay of forms and colors.
