Quebec fisherman Alain Hamel made history by reeling in a record-breaking 244-pound Atlantic halibut in the Saguenay Fjord. This remarkable catch was part of a scientific project, in collaboration with the local Fjord Museum, aiming to gather valuable data about the species. The fishing expedition was no easy feat, as the halibut was estimated to weigh around 110 kilograms. Marc-André Galbrand, the president of the basin committee, emphasized the physical toll of the endeavor, joking that it would require a visit to the physiotherapist afterward. The Saguenay Fjord is currently under a fishing ban for Atlantic halibut, but the project allows for a unique opportunity. Fishermen involved in the project catch, tag, and bring the fish to the museum, where they are weighed and dissected. The catch also offers a delicious reward, as the remaining meat from this week's catch is expected to weigh around 170 pounds.
Another fisherman, Jérôme Rousseau, shared a similar experience, catching a large Atlantic halibut off the coast of Sainte-Rose-du-Nord on the Saguenay River. This catch, after four years of participating in the scientific fishing program and over 1,200 hours of fishing, was a true trophy. The fish was brought to the Fjord Museum, where its head and stomach were analyzed, contributing to the ongoing research.
The fishing season, however, had a premature end. Just hours after the record-breaking catch, the scientific fishing of Atlantic halibut was suspended to avoid exceeding the quota. Out of the 35 halibut authorized under the scientific fishing permit, 27 have already been caught. For the remaining eight, the basin committee is considering a lottery system to select a small number of fishers, similar to restricted zones for salmon or moose.
