President Trump's petulant outburst over a perceived slight has left many scratching their heads, and late-night host Jimmy Kimmel is no exception.
It seems the President of the United States, Donald Trump, sent a rather peculiar and, frankly, "bhy little message"* to the Prime Minister of Norway, Jonas Gahr Støre. This happened just hours before Trump was scheduled to hobnob with global leaders at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. Now, what could possibly prompt such an unusual communication?
But here's where it gets controversial... On Sunday, Trump penned a letter to PM Støre, essentially reiterating his persistent desire to acquire Greenland. The kicker? He explicitly stated that because Norway supposedly didn't award him the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in ending eight wars, he no longer feels compelled to prioritize peace. "Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace," he wrote.
Jimmy Kimmel, during his Tuesday monologue, found this entire situation quite baffling. "Our president sent a text to the leader of another country, which, by the way, is already a weird thing," he quipped. He elaborated on the sheer incredulity of the message: "The idea that he’s typing out a b***hy little message to the Prime Minister of Norway, a message that explicitly says, ‘Since you didn’t give me the peace prize, I’m thinking about taking Greenland away.’ It’s unheard of."
Kimmel didn't hold back, comparing the president's actions to a child's tantrum. "There’s nothing to compare it to in the history of humankind," he declared. "This man is crashing the plane because the stewardess didn’t bring him a bag of peanuts." He went on to suggest that this behavior is a direct result of being overly indulged: "This is what happens to children who get anything they want. This is how they grow up."
To further illustrate his point, Kimmel humorously dubbed Trump "President Veruca Salt," a nod to the spoiled character from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. "‘I want Greenland. I want it now!’ All because he didn’t get a little medal around his neck," Kimmel mimicked. "He’s a child."
And this is the part most people miss... Kimmel also touched upon Trump's extensive late-night posting spree on Truth Social, which included musings about Greenland and other European leaders. "[Trump’s] parents let him stay up late last night, and he posted a lot of nonsense," Kimmel remarked. He even showcased an AI-generated image Trump shared, depicting himself, Marco Rubio, and JD Vance in Greenland. Kimmel found humor in the imagined reactions of his companions: "I like this because even in an AI-generated image, JD and Marco are like, ‘Jesus Christ, what are we doing here?’"
Kimmel further ridiculed Trump for sharing screenshots of private text messages from other world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron. "It’s so interesting to read these, because they really do tiptoe around this maniac," Kimmel observed.
He highlighted Macron's text, which read: "I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland." Kimmel's witty retort? "That makes 8.1 billion of us, friend."
The late-night host continued his critique, questioning Trump's motive for releasing these private exchanges: "Why, I don’t know. Does he think this makes him look good? Every one of these texts reads like they’re talking to a chimp with a hand grenade."
Interestingly, Trump's journey to Switzerland for the World Economic Forum faced a brief hiccup when his plane had to turn back to D.C. due to a "minor electrical issue." However, he eventually boarded another aircraft to make it to Davos, where he's expected to address many of the European leaders who are, understandably, quite perplexed by his fixation on Greenland.
What do you think about President Trump's reaction to not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize? Is it a sign of immaturity, or is there a deeper political strategy at play? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
