In a shocking turn of events, former Canadian Olympic snowboarder Ryan Wedding has been apprehended, drawing comparisons to infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar. This arrest marks a significant moment in the fight against drug trafficking, as US authorities allege that Wedding has operated as a cocaine smuggling kingpin linked to numerous drug-related homicides.
After years evading capture, Wedding was arrested on Thursday in Mexico City and subsequently extradited to the United States, as confirmed by FBI Director Kash Patel. "This individual and his organization, along with the Sinaloa Cartel, have flooded North America with narcotics, leading to countless deaths among our youth and corrupting many of our citizens," Patel stated emphatically. "Today, we put an end to this."
Patel did not hold back in describing Wedding, calling him the "largest narco-trafficker in modern times," placing him alongside notorious figures like Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman and Pablo Escobar. At 44 years old, Wedding now finds himself on the FBI's "Top 10 Most Wanted" list. He is accused of managing a vast transnational drug trafficking operation that allegedly moved hundreds of kilograms of cocaine from Colombia through Mexico into the United States and Canada.
According to US officials, Wedding collaborated with the Sinaloa Cartel and oversaw operations that generated over $1 billion annually in illegal drug sales. The US government had previously announced a staggering $15 million reward for information leading to his capture or conviction, though Patel did not clarify whether this reward would be disbursed following his arrest.
While the details surrounding Wedding's capture remain somewhat unclear, Patel indicated that the FBI coordinated closely with Mexican authorities during his apprehension. Interestingly, Mexico’s security ministry claimed that Wedding "voluntarily surrendered" at the US embassy in Mexico City.
Wedding represented Canada in the 2002 Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City, Utah, but now faces serious legal challenges. He has been charged with overseeing a criminal enterprise and various drug trafficking offenses as per the US Department of Justice. Additionally, he allegedly ordered several murders related to his drug operations, including that of a US federal witness in Colombia in January 2025, who was killed before being able to testify against him. Furthermore, he is implicated in the murders of two individuals in Ontario, Canada, in November 2023, related to a stolen drug shipment, as well as another murder in Canada in May 2024 over a drug debt, according to the FBI.
As part of the ongoing investigation, Wedding will remain in custody in Los Angeles over the weekend and is scheduled for an initial court appearance in the US District Court on Monday. In a broader crackdown, Akil Davis, assistant director of the FBI's Los Angeles field office, revealed that 36 individuals associated with Wedding's alleged criminal network have been arrested. The agency has also confiscated drugs, cash, weapons, vehicles, art pieces, and jewelry valued at millions of dollars during this extensive investigation. Davis added, "We are still pursuing multiple individuals connected to this organization," with a $2 million reward available for information leading to further arrests.
