A thrilling yet controversial moment unfolded at the Bathurst 12 Hour practice, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats. An intense clash between two racing giants brought the session to an early halt, sparking debates and raising questions among fans and experts alike.
As Alfred Renauer, driving the Herbert Motorsport Porsche 911, approached Sulman Park, he made a daring move, attempting to overtake the Graeme Dowsett-piloted Team NZ Aston Martin Vantage. With a slight edge, the Porsche made contact with the Aston Martin, sending it into a slide and ultimately crashing into the wall. This incident triggered the red flag with just over five minutes remaining, and the practice session was unable to resume.
Earlier, Renauer's co-driver, Ralf Bohn, had an unfortunate spin at The Chase, adding to the team's challenges. Additionally, the #42 Method Motorsport McLaren 570S encountered overheating issues, and the team's attempt to leave the pit lane coincided with the red flag, further complicating their situation.
The practice session was topped by Kenny Habul, who piloted his #75 Mercedes-AMG to an impressive performance. Habul's lap time of 2:04.9062s was a remarkable six-tenths faster than local favorite Brad Schumacher's #55 Audi R8, thanks to new tires and a low fuel strategy. This lap could potentially be the fastest ever recorded by the expat Australian, leaving many in awe.
Habul shared his thoughts on the pressure he felt from his teammates, who expected him to deliver a sub-two-minute four-second lap. "I'm not much for quali laps, but with new tires and low fuel, I gave it a go. To be honest, it was a blast! The car felt more responsive with less fuel and fresh tires. It was less stressful than I anticipated, and looking at the data, I could have gone even faster."
Behind Schumacher, team owner-driver Garth Walden, in the #45 GWR Australia/RAM Motorsport Mercedes-AMG, was just a fraction of a second behind, showcasing the tight competition among the top contenders.
Cunfan Ruan represented the international contingent with a strong performance, placing the #89 Team KRC BMW M4 fourth overall. Johannes Zelger's #79 Tsunami RT Porsche 911 secured the fifth-fastest time.
Practice 5 at the Meguiar's Bathurst 12 Hour is set to commence on Saturday at 8:05 am AEDT, and fans are eagerly anticipating more thrilling moments and intense battles on the track.
