The magnetic anomaly, captured in a recent survey, mirrors Australia's unique shape with eerie precision. From its northern point to its widest middle section and the two points extending downwards on either side, it's a stunning coincidence.
Located in Australia's Northern Territory, this anomaly was revealed through an aeromagnetic survey conducted by the government. Small planes equipped with magnetometers scanned the land, uncovering the magnetic memory of rocks beneath the surface.
When rocks form, their magnetic minerals 'lock' onto the direction of Earth's magnetic field at that time. Over millions of years, as the magnetic field shifts and even reverses, these rocks retain this magnetic memory, offering a record of Earth's history.
"Magnetic data is like an X-ray, allowing us to see through the ground and uncover hidden geological structures," explains Clive Foss, a geoscientist at CSIRO.
The so-called Australia Magnetic Anomaly originates from volcanic rocks over 1.5 billion years old, interspersed with sandstone from ancient seas and river deltas. Over time, geological forces have shaped these layers into a remarkable resemblance of the continent.
The new map, created by Dr. Aaron Davis, offers the clearest view yet, revealing finer details of this underground magnetic landscape.
"By refining the dataset and improving our modeling techniques, we can extract more geological insights than ever before," Foss adds.
This data is now freely available to scientists, potentially leading to the discovery of valuable mineral deposits.
